(Shinu) / Ancient Beauty
“Shinu (仕女) is closely translated as ‘ancient beauty’ in English. Shinu tu (painting of beauties) is a genre of traditional Chinese painting. As a child, I used to doodle these figures. Several years ago, a line in a poem of mine, ‘I’ve watched the ghosts coming back / in their long gowns of grief,’ made me think of those past scribbles. In some of these paintings, I coupled shinu with little houses … I think of this series as both a nostagia and longing for home.” — Ye Chun |
