natürlich dachten wir, daß sie plemplem
geworden waren, als sie ungeschützt
aus ihrer deckung traten, nur mit plum-
pudding und mistelzweig — doch kein geschütz

schlug an. wir trafen sie im niemandsland,
unschlüssig was zu tun sei, zwischen gräben
und grenzen, schlamm und draht, und jede hand
an ihrer hosennaht. bis wir die gaben

verteilten: einer hatte zigaretten
dabei und einer bitterschokolade,
ein dritter wußte mittel gegen ratten
und läuse. die an diesem punkt noch lade-

hemmung hatten, zückten nach dem rum
familienfotos, spielten halma
und standen lärmend, wechselten reihum
adressen, uniformen, helme,

bis kaum etwas im schein der leuchtspurgarben
auf diesem aufgeweichten, nackten anger
zu tauschen übrig blieb außer den gräben
im rücken, ihrem namenlosen hunger.

plemplem, we imagined them, of course,
as each and every one, without protection,
stepped from the regiment, holding christmas
pudding, sprigs of mistletoe — yet, no gun

fired. we met them out in no man’s land,
unsure of what to do, between the trenches
and the borders, mud and wire, and every hand
against its holster as the other unclenched

the alms: one gave us of his cigarettes.
a second knew the remedies for rats
and lice. another had dark chocolate.
whoever in the group that couldn’t yet

unjam his inhibition, now took out rum
and family pictures, played a round of halma
as we gathered noisily exchanging names
and home addresses, uniforms and helmets,

so barely one more thing within the banks
of light, along this rain-wet, naked pasture,
was left to be exchanged — except the trenches
dug in back of us, their nameless hunger.
