Île Saint-Louis

“I had the great fortune of finding a tiny ‘maid’ apartment to rent while studying at Spéos (The Paris Photographic Institute). One of my assignments was to spend the year documenting a place. I was completely enchanted with my temporary home on Île Saint-Louis, one of two natural islands in Paris, and went out almost every day to capture some aspect of the place and its residents. As a foreign student, everything was new, different and charming. I was never at a loss for what to photograph. After more than ten years, the photos seem to capture everyday occurrences much more than I thought when I took them…”

Biography

ANNA LOW has had her work exhibited at Portland Photo Works, Sylvia Kana Gallery, Eli Phant, Novares Res, and other venues. Now living in Portland, Maine, another community that is “new… (and sometimes surprisingly foreign to a Midwesterner)”, she is inspired to document this city’s everyday activities just as she did on Île Saint-Louis — early morning meetings at the café, windows posted with apartments for rent, shop windows and the first snowfall.
