“My childhood was spent dancing; it was my first love and my first career. Dancing informs my paintings. When I begin work on a piece I see the paper or canvas as an empty stage and the line as movement. Texture, form, the way that colors interact are all different manifestations of motion and energy. My excitement in finding a true or honest line, formal and expressive, has led me to more and more involvement with drawing in my paintings. In my “Tuning Fields” series, I am working with line driven layers of colors, rhythms , and patterns to create fields of motion evocative of nature.”

Biography

MARGARET GARRETT spent her childhood training to be a dancer. At sixteen she joined the Pennsylvania Ballet Company in Philadelphia. She then went on to dance with other companies and to work in theater and film. At the age of twenty-two she began painting, finding something spiritually akin to dance in the color and movement of paint. She devoted herself to painting full time and studied privately with the painter Thorpe Feidt, a disciple of George McNeil. Garrett’s abstract paintings and works on paper have been exhibited at museums and galleries in New York and on the East End of Long Island. In 2012 she received an Award of Merit from the Heckscher Museum for her painting Tuning Fields 246. Her work is included in numerous private and corporate collections. Garrett is currently affiliated with the Danese Gallery in New York City. Her website is www.margaretgarrett.com.
